A Short History of Pula Arena
The Pula Arena dates mainly from the 1st century AD, when the Roman Empire controlled this part of the Adriatic. Its development is associated with the reign of Emperor Vespasian, the same emperor connected with the construction of the Colosseum in Rome.
The amphitheatre was designed to host large public spectacles, including gladiatorial contests.
What makes the Arena particularly special today is its remarkably preserved outer wall. Its huge stone arches are still one of the defining sights of Pula and provide an immediate reminder of just how important the city was during Roman times.
